Asked & Answered with Katie Thompson
This month’s Asked & Answered was really fun for me since the subject is my daughter, Katie. While most of her answers didn’t surprise me, I was a little concerned as to what some of them would be!
G&S: You have many, many nicknames. Which ones do you want to share here?
KT: I have a few nicknames that I actually get called, besides the not so nice ones from my brother. A few of them are Kthom, Katie Lou, Katie T., and my Papa use to call me Poopdoodle (which is a name that only he was allowed to call me).
G&S: Who are your immediate family members?
KT: My immediate family members are my mom, Jen, my dad, Todd, and my brother, Taylor. I, personally, would include my best friend Shelby because, over the years, she’s become family.
G&S: Shelby is part of the family. Where do you currently call home?
KT: I currently call Pennsylvania my home!
G&S: And where else have you lived?
KT: Besides Pennsylvania, I’ve also lived in Arkansas and I currently go to school in Virginia, which I’m at 9 months or more out of the year. So I guess I live there too!
G&S: This is probably a silly question to ask a college student, but what takes up most of your time?
KT: Most of my time is taken up by school work. With being a History major, there’s always a paper to write or a book to read!
G&S: Speaking of reading, what are you reading right now?
KT: Currently, I’m reading about the Civil War (which is for one of the summer classes I’m taking), but the book I’m reading for fun is Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen. Just something light and easy to read in my spare time!
G&S: Can you share what some of your all time favorite books are?
KT: I absolutely LOVE all of the Harry Potter books! I’m also a fan of anything Jane Austen. But one of my favorite books is not a Harry Potter book or a Jane Austen. It’s called Enthusiasm by Polly Shulman, which is a more modern day kind of Pride and Prejudice book. I fell in love with it in 7th grade and I actually try to read it once a year. Silly, I know, but I just adore the book and I get giddy every time I read it.
G&S: How about a few of your favorite TV shows? And Netflix counts.
KT: Some of my favorite shows are The Walking Dead, Scandal, Orange is the New Black, and Once Upon a Time. But two of my all-time favorite shows are Friends and Gilmore Girls. It may seem silly, but both shows got me through some pretty difficult times here and there. And they’re just so funny!
G&S: Which is your TV food of choice? Sweet or salty?
KT: I love food, so I have many TV show foods I eat. I love Sour Patch (the watermelon kind. The Sour Patch Kids are okay, but the watermelons have a special place in my heart). I also really love anything chocolate. But I’m also a huge popcorn gal. Honestly, all I do is eat, so anything really works for me!
G&S: What is your favorite holiday?
KT: I know it sounds cliché but I love Christmas. It isn’t totally because of what Hallmark has made it out to be, but what it represents and what amazing thing happened during Christmas. I also really love the Christmas lights. They are one of my most favorite commercial things about the season. I think that there is something so special and beautiful about driving around with people you love and looking at Christmas lights.
G&S: (I will testify that Katie loves Christmas. One year when we were going to be gone for Christmas she drug a fake ficus tree up from the basement and decorated it.) What is your favorite scripture and why?
KT: My favorite scripture is Romans 8:28. I encourage you to look it up, but in short it means that God has called us according to His purpose and that He’ll do amazing things through us. I love it because even when I can’t think of anything I’ve done right, I know that God has a purpose for me and that I’m going to do great things through him, even when I can’t see it at the time.
G&S: And finally, why do you write for Grace & Such?
KT: I write for Grace & Such because my mom made me… Just kidding! I write for G&S because my goal is to reach out to a younger audience and have them see that they are not alone when they feel less than. I also hope that with the women that are a little older than me, that I get to speak to them too as well as show them that there are at least a few people left that are not like the reputation of my generation.
G&S: Well, that was fun! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, Katie!

I get a kick out of the fact that my daughter and her friends watch Friends, since it was appointment TV for us in the ’90s, when we weren’t much older than she is now. I’d like to hate Jennifer Aniston, though, because she’s a month older than me, and we don’t look like twins. Frustrating!! I enjoy the GGs, too. I love that you write for this blog, Katie. It IS important for we women to hear from and about each other at every stage. Oh, I also adore Christmas lights.
Taylor used to do the Ross “dance” whenever he heard the theme song come on. He was about 2, maybe 3. The opening was all he ever got to see of the show. lol And GG was kind of like parenting 101 for my teen!
Thank you, Katie, for not surprising me too much. 😉
I just loved reading this. I admire how Katie has inherited your love of reading and strong faith. She is an exceptional young lady, which is not surprising since she is your daughter. I see she also shares your (and Todd’s) cheeky sense of humor. I am a woman who is “a little older,” and she has, in fact, renewed my faith in the next generation. I wish we lived closer so she could be a role model for my niece. ?
I think I like “Katie Deweese, not Katie de dog” as your nickname!
